Beginning in January 2013, this Aklan Holidays celebration drew inspiration from Kalibo Sto. Considered the mother of Philippine Festivals is the Nino Ati-than Festival. The Boracay rendition emphasises the fluvial procession, the participation of actual Ati’s, the aborigines, and the ati-than march at the front beach. Usually, this is carried out on the first weekend of January every year. Seeing January 2024, when countless visitors arrived—more than the normal Love Boracay—the local administration of Malay, Aklan, has chosen to change its status as a celebration of Boracay.
The Barangay Yapak Council initially brought this celebration to Aklan last February 11, 2024. This took place at Puka Beach, noted for its Puka Shells. The locals claim that although visitors have yet to find the island, the custom has been a favourite childhood pastime of their forebears. This celebration in Aklan was meant to occur annually, but in 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte gave a six-month ban on Boracay orders. Boracay officials are still debating when to bring the Lumot Battle back. Hopefully, the following year!
Laboracay is the name of this festival in Aklan used to be. It started with Labour Day since Malay town honours St. Joseph the Laborer’s feast day on May 1. Once, it was the hub of the annual celebration. But following environmental damage in 2018 that caused the six-month closure of this resort island, the stakeholders replaced it with the name Love Boracay, which today emphasises environmental awareness for visitors and locals to guarantee the ecological viability of this resort island. Among other things, events include marine sports contests and talks on environmental protection. Usually, starting the last week of April of every year, the event lasts one week.
It is also sometimes called the Obreros Festival. Originally, the Malay town celebrated every May 1 at the Poblacion, Malay on the mainland. The people living in Malay Aklan have followed the custom for years. Barangay Argao Every December 28, the Barangay Argao, Malay, gets dressed like devils and performs street dance using their corresponding costumes. They wander the streets soliciting money or contributions for food. For years, the inhabitants sporting devil-like outfits had been benign; their sole goal was pleasure. The Catholic Church has let the mentioned custom blossom since it honours the day King Herod gave the command for the killing of newborns in search of Jesus.
