That doesn’t mean Cebu has no fun things to do. People from both Spain and China used to trade with the island, and you can still see signs of that if you know where to look. In the middle of Cebu City, near the Basilica del Santo Niño, you can find Magellan’s Cross in a small church. Some say this big wooden Cross has pieces of the first Cross that the Portuguese explorer placed here in 1521.
A very fancy Taoist temple is also on a hill just outside the city. It was built in 1972 by the island’s large Chinese community. Three steep stairs lead up to the temple. Once you get there, you can enjoy a view of the city and the islands farther away while admiring the temple’s complex, multi-level design. Just off the island’s eastern coast is Mactan, also called Lapu-Lapu. This smaller island has nice beaches and a marine wildlife haven with excellent coral reefs for snorkelling.
Even though it’s farther from the coast, Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is easy to reach by taking a short public bangka ride. The reserve protects coralline marshes, mangrove trees, and huge beds of seagrass. Because of its location, it is an important stop for birds travelling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
Birdwatchers can see about 100 kinds of birds here, with about equal numbers of resident species and species just passing through. You can look for rare Chinese egrets, wading birds with long, bright white legs, or Asiatic dowitchers, brownish birds with needle-like beaks that run quickly through the waving swamp grasses on short, black legs.
