Bangon-Bugtong Falls

Bangon-Bugtong Falls is Samar’s “City of Waterfalls” crown jewel. This waterfall is accessible from Calbayog by a 1-hour and 15-minute ride to Brgy.
Tinaplacan and a 3-km walk off the highway (or habal-habal ride). Quite far, but worth it.
You must walk on the cascades to reach the big falls. This ascent leads to the main falls’ enormous, circular pool. After a long trip, swimming is a refreshing activity.
As with any waterfall, there are slippery parts. Long habal-habal rides can be pricey, so consider travelling in groups or planning. Calbayog is a city greater than Biliran Island’s subprovince.
Guinogo-an and Lungsod Caves in Brgy are other close outdoor attractions. Longsob, A 1-hour drive and a half-hour climb are usual for these destinations.
For convenience, consider combining nearby destinations into a single trip. Tabokno Falls in Brgy is another city waterfall.
Caybago has drinkable waters, while Pan-as Falls has cascades so high that “the falling water becomes mere mist”.
Most of these sites require an hour or more of travel (habal-habal, or adapted motorcycles, are the fastest form of public transportation).

Calbayog Cathedral, a national heritage church, was formerly the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and the Parish of Our Lady’s Nativity.

The first cathedral in Leyte and Samar, and the mother of the Eastern Visayas diocese. The foundation of Calbayog was Hibatang.
The village was moved along the Sabang-Cahumpang by the Calbayog River following flooding to avoid Moro incursions. Calbayog was named after the river in 1737.
This church was refurbished in the early 1900s. The pulpit, chandeliers, and clock in the facade were imported from Europe and painted by Cirilo Buenaventura and Señor Respall.
Colonially, the Diocese of Cebu oversaw the churches of Leyte and Samar. Tacloban and Catbalogan, the capitals of Leyte and Samar, were provinces in 1768. Samar and Leyte churches were incorporated in Pope Pius X’s Diocese of Calbayog on April 10, 1910.
Bishop Pablo Singzon named the cathedral Cathedral of the Diocese and invoked Saints Peter and Paul in 1912.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines placed a Level II marker on the cathedral.

St. Bartholomew Church

One of the oldest parishes in Catbalogan, St. Bartholomew was founded in 1616 by Jesuit missionaries as a Mission Centre and Residencia.
Jesuits first preached in Katbalaugan in 1596. They moved to Katbalaugan when Moro pirates burned down their Residencia and Mission Centre in Tinago, Tarangnan, in 1616.
The Jesuit missionaries’ frequent stopover town was combined with the surrounding settlements of Cotay, Cawayan (forerunner of Zumarraga), and Canahawan (currently a barangay of Catbalogan) to form a pueblo and parish.
In addition to Catbalogan, the new Residencia ruled over seven other seacoast and river visitas/pueblos: Paranas, Bangahun (now Gandara) and Tinago, Calbiga, Umauas (now Villareal), Capul, and Yvatan. It became Samar’s cabecera as the Residencia.
Six or seven Jesuit priests and brothers lived and worked at Catbalogan Residencia.
From this Mission Centre, they converted the people of the visitas and pueblos under their jurisdiction to Christianity by navigating dangerous waters and trudging for days across rough terrain.
